Experts on foreign and security policy
Our analysts are real experts in their respective fields of expertise. Not only do they have information collected via open source media, but they are also able to obtain a situation picture first-hand thanks to intelligence methods.
Our assessments are particularly important for the Federal Government if no information or only conflicting information is obtainable through other channels.
Strict secrecy ensures that the Federal Government has an information lead and thus the necessary room for action in its foreign and security policy.
Service provider of the Federal Government
In principle, the BND informs all departments of the Federal Government, but its main points of contact are those ministries where foreign and security policies play a particularly important role.
These include (in addition to the Federal Chancellery) the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministries of Defense, of the Interior and Community, for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and for Economic Cooperation and Development.
From warning to analysis
Every one of these recipients has different responsibilities and requirements. We, the BND, want to meet all needs for information in a manner tailored to each recipient.
About 150 expert briefings are held every month.
If the BND receives a current warning regarding a planned attack in Mali, we inform the Bundeswehr units stationed there straight away and via a secure line.
Something more strategic, such as an analysis on geopolitical developments in Asia, will take longer to compile and may have several departments working on it together.
We produce around 400 reports a month and answer approximately 750 requests from the Federal Government. Moreover, about 150 expert briefings between our staff and representatives of the ministries are held every month.
